Simón Bolívar advocated for independence from the Spanish empire, thus making him an important figure throughout South America. He founded the republics of Gran Colombia and Bolivia and was even involved in the fight for independence in a number of other countries, such as Venezuela and Peru. Bolívar is paid tribute all over South America and  Cuba. The museum dedicated to the prominent figure, the Museo Casa de Simón Bolívar (Simón Bolívar House Museum), on Calle Mercaderes (Mercaderes Street) in Old Havana was founded in 1993, around the time of his birth anniversary.

The museum, housed in what was once a palace, was built between 1806 and 1817. To this day, its 19th century Havana neoclassical style and architecture remains highly preserved. Visitors can discover the old and elegant building inside and out during their visit.

The exhibitions inside give visitors insight into Bolivian history, outstanding independence fighters, as well as the culture and struggle of other South American countries. Among the exhibitions, visitors can find the Colección de Plástica Contemporánea Venezolana (Venezuelan Contemporary Plastic Collection), which is entirely made up of pieces donated by prize-winning Venezuelan artists. The Colección de Barro Policromado (Polychrome Clay Collection) features 35 pieces of polychrome clay made to tell the story of Simón Bolívar. And the Colección de Objetos Históricos (Collection of Historical Objects) highlights two original documents signed by Bolívar himself and a replica of his sword.

Visitors can also stop by the archaeological collection or the Simón Rodríguez Library, dedicated to Bolívar’s mentor. The library is overflowing with books and documents of South American origin.
