Where and how to celebrate the end of the year in Cuba?

The end of year party is of great importance in Cuba. The entire country celebrates, from its largest cities, to its small and unique towns, or the Cays with turquoise beaches. Cities like the colorful Havana, the colonial Trinidad, the natural Cienfuegos, the cultural Santa Clara, or the historical Santiago de Cuba fill their streets with Christmas lights and breath a friendly and familiar atmosphere

Hotels and restaurants usually organize typical end of year banquets with shows for their visitors. The most popular are the historic Hotel Nacional de Cuba, the centrally located Iberostar Parque Central of Havana, the modern Hotel Meliá Habana or the Caribbean hotel Meliá Buena Vista, hotels where you can enjoy traditional Cuban food, music, shows, and much more. After midnight, fireworks and New Year's traditions take over. Gatherings in plazas or on Havana's popular boardwalk to toast and enjoy live music are common. The dance floors and bars open and the party continues to bid farewell to the year.

But apart from the end of the year party, before and after New Year's Eve there are three other very important festivities for Cuba. On December 24th, Las Parrandas de Remedios, on January 1st the Triumph of the Revolution and on January 2nd the Victory Day. On the 24th, apart from preparing for Christmas Eve, the city of Remedios celebrates one of the most popular festivities in the country, Las Parrandas de Remedios, which originated in 1820, when the priest of the municipality asked a group of children to help him wake up the neighbors by making noise in the streets, so that they would attend the Misa de Aguinaldo. That event evolved to a point where nowadays it has become a big party where two parts of the town compete against each other, making dances, floats, fireworks... There is a pause to attend the Misa del Gallo, but then the party continues.

Traveling to Cuba for the end of the year also means experiencing two of the country's most important holidays. The Triumph of the Revolution and Victory Day which are celebrated on the 1st and the 2nd respectively. The Triumph of the Revolution, the national holiday of the Revolution, commemorates the triumphal entry of the revolutionary leaders acclaimed by the people of Havana. The following day, on the 2nd, Victory Day is celebrated, the feast of the triumph of the people against the dictator Batista. These days Cubans take to the streets and stroll along the Boardwalk of the Cuban capital. Then, in the rest of the country, concerts are held in the main cities where the end of year celebrations continue.

Spending New Year's Eve in Cuba is more than a one-night party. In just one week you will be able to experience most of the typical celebrations of the country. Discovering its history and traditions, and understanding where these and its people come from.

In Havana you can walk through the colorful and historic streets of its well-known historic center, Old Havana, its exceptional architecture, the Boardwalk, the Plaza de la Revolución, or Capitolio Nacional de Cuba and its wide cultural opportunities, place Havana as one of the best destinations to visit in Latin America. It is currently a museum city, its cobblestone streets, restored colonial buildings, imposing churches make Trinidad an idyllic city to visit.

Another very good option is to visit Santiago de Cuba, the second most important city in Cuba, with a great colonial history, it was founded in 1515 and numerous places from this time are still standing remembering this historical moment that changed the history of the island forever. Its architecture, art, and traditions will take you back half a century. Visiting the Museo de Ambiente Histórico Cubano, catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, or the Balcón de Velázquez, is a very good option in order to get to know this historic colonial city.

And if what you want is to get into the Cuban nature, these temperatures are ideal for long routes through the many natural parks to see its spectacular fauna and flora. Also well known for its historical importance, closely linked to the revolutionaries and Fidel Castro. These places are spectacular if what you are looking for is to know the fauna and flora or to see the best landscapes on the island. Its trails will allow you the possibility to explore these parks from the inside.

It runs through coffee plantations, past traditional houses, cliffs, and ends at the Salto del Caburní, a spectacular waterfall where you can cool off at the end of the walk. What traditions are celebrated during the end of the year in Cuba?

Each country has its own peculiar traditions to end the year and start the new one the best way possible; Cuba is no different. The traditions that stand out are the burning of the old year, throwing water in the streets, and performing various rituals.

One of the most popular traditions is to throw water onto the streets from the balconies which has two purposes: originally it was to clean out all the bad things for the new year with water, but now, apart from that, it has the enjoyable function of a "war" of water between neighbors. There is nothing better than starting the year with a smile. Another quite popular tradition is the burning of the old year or, burning of the doll, which represents the destruction of all the bad things that happened during the year. The doll, inspired by a television character, is burned. And finally, there are also people who perform curious rituals such as going out with a suitcase on the street if you want to travel, putting money in your shoes if you want to improve your economic situation, or wearing a red garment inside out to have luck in love.

But this does not end on the night of the 31st, the next day, January 1st, "The Triumph of the Cuban Revolution" is celebrated. A spectacular military parade and march of the Combatant People takes place in the Plaza de la Revolucion in Havana. But there is much more, recreational and artistic activities for all tastes are held in most of the Cuban cities. Band concerts, presentations of great Cuban troubadours, children's songs, plays, and many others you can enjoy as if you were a Cuban.
