Museum of Religious Art and History in Old Havana

Revel in the works and displays at the Museo de Arte Sacro (Museum of Religious Art and History) in Old Havana, Cuba

The Museo de Arte Sacro (Museum of Religious Art and History) is located inside the Iglesia y Convento de San Francisco de Asís (San Francisco de Asís Church and Convent). Both of which are located in the Plaza de San Francisco de Asís (San Francisco de Asís Square) in Old Havana. Visitors often tour the museum during their visit to the church. If you are looking to appreciate ancient works of art, with deep religious themes, a visit to the Museo de Arte Sacro is a must.

The museum was inaugurated in 1994 after the religious complex was restored. However, the site was not always home to the museum. It served as a factory, the friar’s choir room, a customs warehouse, and the Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad (City Historian’s Office), which is responsible for preserving Havana’s heritage and the group that suggested renovating the church and convent as well as opening galleries and inaugurating the  Museo de Arte Sacro

You can find the following collections within the church’s stone walls and columns:

1. Colección de pintura (Painting Collection). Inside you can Latin American paintings from the XVII, XVIII and XIX century.

2. Colección de Arte Sacro contemporáneo (Collection of Sacred Contemporary Art). Here, you can find a larger variation of more recent works, such as paintings, sculptures etc.

3. Colección de imaginería (Imagery Collection). In 18th century Spain imagery was considered a distinguished artistic discipline. This genre carried on to the countries Spain has conquered. The most remarkable piece in this collection is San Francisco de Asís sculpture.

4. Colección de orfebrería (Gold and Silverware Collection). This collection features the silverware used during important services. The most notable: a bookstand that belonged to the old church.

5. Colección arqueológica (Archaeological collection). This is the convent’s most extensive collection of objects found after the island was excavated.
