Calle Mercaderes (Mercaderes Street) is located near the bay of Old Havana. The street is named after its many shops. And as you walk down the street, where gold, silk, and linen were once traded, you will encounter other streets with just as much historical background like O’Reilly and Obra Píra street. This typical colonial street, characterized by its narrow width, is sure to lead you to many interesting places throughout the city.

Calle Mercaderes (Mercaderes Street) is full of museum. Visitors can enter one of the many free cultural institutions along the steer, such as the Museo Casa de Asia (Asia House Museum), which houses chinese sculptures and paintings, the Museo del Tabaco (Tobacco Museum), an important Cuban product, the Museo Armería 9 de Abril (9 de Abril Armory Museum), the Museo de los Bomberos (Firefighters Museum), an important Cuban institution, the Museo Casa de África (Africa House Museum), where visitors can discover the relationship between Cuba and Africa and sacred objects are found, the Museo Casa del Chocolate (House of Chocolate Museum), the Museo Casa de Simón Bolívar (Simón Bolívar House Museum), dedicated to the Southamerican figure, and the Museo Casa de Oswaldo Guayasamín (Oswaldo Guayasamín House Museum).

Other museums are private and require an entrance fee, but they are worth the price. Some of these museums include the Museo Maqueta de La Habana Vieja (Model Museum of Old Havana), which you should visit at the beginning or end of your trip through Old Havana, the Museo Casa de México Benito Juárez (Benito Juárez House of Mexico Museum), and the beautiful, colonial, Casa de la Obra Pía (Obra Pía House Museum).

And if you’re looking for a greener place to visit, walk your way down Calle Mercaderes (Mercaderes Street). You’ll run into beautiful parks and gardens with sculptures of Simón Bolívar or Oswaldo Guayasamín’s sculpture of the leader of the indigenous resistance in Ecuador, Rumiñahui.
