Vista Alegre is the name by which the most famous neighborhood in Santiago de Cuba is known. The only one of its kind in Cuba, it is a good alternative if you are looking to stroll through the streets and admire the modernist architecture of the last century that is so varied on display in the 165 buildings. Keep in mind that although they look like many other houses, what is significant about the place is that before it was built it was thought out to the millimeter, so that an intention of improvement and progress is sensed on the part of the builders to enhance the city.
Dating back to 1907 and now occupied, above all, by wealthy families, the Vista Alegre neighborhood has been inhabited all this time by all kinds of different social classes and institutions. Perhaps the movement of people who have passed through these houses has put aside one of the most important issues for both tourism and residents. Since there are not a few buildings that have collapsed as a result of capitalism, that is, companies that do not look beyond personal enrichment. Luckily, work is being done today so that Vista Alegre is recognized as a National Monument of the country and, therefore, it has the prevention measures that are undoubtedly necessary.
