Daiquiri Beach, Santiago de Cuba

Learn about the history of Playa Daiquiri in Santiago de Cuba, today a space for the enjoyment of a few

Daiquiri Beach in Santiago de Cuba is nowadays a place of limited access to combatants of the Cuban nation so, unfortunately, the public cannot enjoy this paradise surrounded by hills covered by exuberant tropical nature.

The relevance of this place dates back to the Cuban war of independence against Spain in which the United States intervened, clearly with colonial interests. In Daiquiri Beach and Siboney the landing of the American troops took place after the unsuccessful attempt to do so in the western part of the island. This strategy surprised the Spaniards who were not prepared to transfer the fight to Santiago de Cuba, a city they took shortly after landing.

After these events, the area, far from being the recreational space that it is today, became a key point for mining exploitation, which was mainly exported to the United States. This place was the scene of cruel treatment towards workers, many Spaniards who came with false promises of work. They suffered a large number of illnesses and occupational accidents in addition to abusive conditions on the part of the employers. This caused a multitude of riots that, far from having any benefit, resulted in the massive dismissal of many of them.

Later, the mines stopped being a good business and the companies left the area. After the 1959 Revolution, the nation took possession of the land and became a place for the enjoyment of anyone who wished.

In 1969 the Ministry of the Interior created a school in which to train young people to be in charge of the security of the country, an urgent need of the nation. Thanks to the support of different institutions, it is possible to open this center that will carry out different missions in aid of the country and Daiquirí Beach, belonging to this complex, will be a private area for the rest of these combatants.
