The Abel Santamaría de Cuba Historical Complex is made up of a park and a museum, the first located almost next to the historic Cuartel Moncada and the second on top of the ruins of the Saturnino Lora Civil Hospital, both in Santiago de Cuba.

As its name suggests, the place pays tribute to the revolutionary Abel Santamaría, who in 1953 led the simultaneous attack on the Saturnino Lora Civil Hospital while Fidel Castro was in charge of the Moncada Barracks. Both one and the other aimed to put an end to the dictatorial regime of Fulgencio Batista and to definitively transform the course of the country. However, Fidel Castro did not think at any time that Abel Santamaría was in danger, since in his mind he would only occupy the barracks preventing his opponents from doing so before. He was clearly wrong because Abel was caught and killed shortly after, which was the hardest blow of the entire feat. For this reason, the museum has been configured as the main tourist attraction of the monumental complex since its creation in 1973, which is why it received the dignity of a National Monument in 1998.

In the seven rooms of the museum, as well as in the outdoor areas, you will be able to see not only what concerns the two episodes described above, but also all the previous history of the hospital The statue of José Martí and where the trials took place. Fidel Castro, the most notable of the latter being the nurses' ward because in it he pronounced the words "History will absolve me." It is indescribable what you will feel in this space because, in addition to what has been said, everything is complemented with surgical instruments, documents, photographs, etc.
