The Locomotora a vapor 964 (Steam Locomotive 964), better known as “Panchito”, is a key item in the history and Banes city development in the Cuban province of Holguín. This locomotive is the first to arrive in the town in 1888 together with the Dumois brothers and in honour to them, it got the youngest brother’s name: Francisco.
In those days the small village of Banes devoted itself mainly to banana cultivation and it started to export mainly to the United States where the bananas got popular. Afterwards the Dumois brothers bought this locomotive for H.K. Locomotive Works that was in charge of the product transportation all the way to the port.
Panchito is a symbol of economic progress in the area that had to be removed to avoid damage when the independence wars started. Once they were over, Panchito was already obsolete and other machines had to do its job. A couple of years ago it was placed near the bus station of the city to reminisce about its significance during the city’s first years and although it has been completely restored, it still has that certain spirit of the yesteryear.
