Shortly after Columbus arrived on the American coast, this place was exploited as a salt mine until the 1930s when the interest of the peninsula shifted to tourism. However, the characteristics of this natural reserve make it a unique place of great interest to visitors.
Varahicacos is a wonderful place to discover the exotic and wild fauna and flora that floods the entire reserve. It is home to many different animal species, including reptiles and birds, some of which are in danger of extinction. The flora is of an indescribable majesty, bright colours, thin and very tall palms and giant leaves cover the entire surface. It is important to mention the existence of El Patriarca, a cactus that is over 300 years old. The coast has reefs full of corals, fish and starfish. In its transparent waters, you can find sharks, rays or beautiful sea turtles among others.
In addition to the natural wealth of this paradise, the Reserva Ecológica Varahicacos is home to some of the most important archaeological findings in the country. The Cueva de Ambrosio (Ambrosio Cave) is famous for the cave paintings that decorate its walls and seem to come from pre-Columbian aborigines and later civilizations from Africa. The Cueva de los Musulmanes (Cave of the Musulmanes) is another cave that had funerary functions, as evidenced by the human remains dated 20 centuries ago.
