The Museo Farmacéutico (Pharmaceutical Museum) in Matanzas, located in the popular Parque de la Libertad (Liberty Park), formerly Plaza de Armas (Arma Square), in this Cuban city, is the first museum of its kind in Latin America. Today, it is the only French apothecary from the late 19th century to be preserved worldwide, which also keeps all its original furniture and gadgets.

The apothecary opened its doors in 1882 thanks to the French doctor Ernesto Triolet in a neoclassical building. For almost 100 years, the Triolet family has been offering the neighbours of Matanzas high-quality products. It soon became a very famous and crowded establishment until 1963, when it was nationalized to become a museum.
After a restoration process, the museum not only shows the apothecary's shop as it was when it was active, with all its laboratory pieces, recipe books, hundreds of bottles and other instruments but also allows visitors to visit the old family home.
Entering the old store is a journey back in time, to the colonial era where our imagination can guess the purpose of the hundreds of remedies that were sold there and are still preserved.
This space contains a unique and curious exhibition, but it is not only its pieces that stand out. The building itself is one of the most beautiful in the city, both its facade and its interiors are remarkable. The building has been a National Monument since 2007 and in 2008 it received the National Restoration Award for perfectly recreating the original atmosphere of the apothecary's shop and transporting us to the times when work was done there.
