Political system in Cuba

Learn about the political regime that Cuba is governed by today and how it works

The Republic of Cuba in terms of its political status is defined as a popular democracy, a socialist state in which a figure acts as head of State, head of Government and commander-in-chief, this figure also acts as President of the Council of State of Cuba and the Council of Ministers.

The political regime of Cuba is constituted as a popular democracy, which was confirmed and definitively established in 1959 after the Revolution, and is in constant evolution until reaching socialism in all its forms.

The Cuban constitution establishes that Cuba is a socialist state, and it is impossible to make any kind of change in the established social or economic regimes, in addition, a single legal political party is established, which is the Communist Party of Cuba.

In Cuba, the government is made up of three fundamental organs, which are: The National Assembly of People's Power, the Council of State and the Council of Ministers.

The National Assembly of Power is the Cuban unicentral parliament, encompasses the constituent and legislative powers, and has the ability to elect the members of the executive and judicial bodies.

The People's Power Assembly of each municipality and the electors are the only ones to whom the deputies have to justify their votes. The body that represents parliament is the Council of State, which is made up of the Head of State together with the government, the first vice president, and five other vice presidents, a secretary and twenty-three other members.

The Council of Ministers that deals with executive tasks is made up of the president, the first vice president of the Council of State, a group of vice presidents, the ministers and presidents of other ministerial institutions.

Cuba has three more superior bodies, which are: The People's Supreme Court, which holds the judicial power, the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic, which ensures the control and preservation of legality, and the Comptroller General of the Republic, which exercises the functions of auditor of the economy and state finances.

The Minister of the Interior, which is a body that is dedicated to the security and control of the country together with the Revolutionary Defense Committee, which is a non-governmental organization that is dedicated to ensuring the safety of citizens on the streets of Cuba and to maintain the cleanliness of these, and is made up of citizens who join the committee from the age of 14.
